GreenDIYenergy Review

 solar pannel 5 stars
solar pannels 2 starssolar pannels 2 more stars
Overall 9 out of 10

As I said earlier, GreenDIYEnergy is the product that I recommend, with a rating of 9 out of 10. You just can't go past this guide. It's right at the top of the Solar kit DIY guide market, and for good reason. Our score is heavily influenced by the outstanding quality of the instructional videos, which form the major component of this product

These videos, together with the terrific written manuals, the breadth of content and the ongoing backup support are outstanding. The goal is to enable people from all backgrounds to follow their DIY green energy project through to the end, up to the point where they actually flip the switch to turn on that flow of free renewable electricity.

Out of the two products, I think that the GreenDIYenergy guide is the one most likely to get you through to the successful completion of your project.

Product cost and guarantees

 10 out of 10

At the time of this review, the price of GreenDIYenergy is $49.97, the same as Earth4Energy, having been recently slashed from $197. I think there's a price war going on with Earth4Energy that probably won't last, so take advantage of market forces. Grab your copy before the price goes back up. GreenDIYEnergy offers a 100% no-questions-asked money back guarantee for 60 days.

Advertised minimum cost for DIY panel build and install

 9 out of 10

GreenDIYEnergy provides a walk-through step-by-step process that guarantees that you'll be able to put together your first solar kit for well under the advertised benchmark of $200, and also affirms that this solar power cost can be as low as $100 with an increased effort in sourcing materials. It should be noted that several panels working together in an array would be required to fully service the power needs of an average home.

GreenDIYenergy is very good at pointing you in the right direction to learn exactly how you can minimise your construction costs, and takes the points here over the Earth4Energy product. Even though you will need to liaise with a licensed electrician at various stages for safety and compliance reasons, the manufacture and installation is done by you, which makes the target budget of $200 or less easily achievable.

What do you actually get with your purchase?

 9 out of 10

You are buying a 6-part instructor-led video course detailing step by step how to source, construct, wire and test your own DIY solar panels, a 2-part written DIY solar panel guide, a 2-part written DIY Home Wind Power guide and accompanying instructional videos, a Sizing Calculator spreadsheet, a written Installation guide, and 5 more written resources which include technical detail as well as pointers to other useful resources on the web where you can find information to supplement your project, such as Wind maps, etc.

There is also a library of videos that showcases many successful DIY solar kit and wind projects, completed by renewable energy enthusiasts, for your enjoyment, inspiration and further learning.

Free ongoing backup support is also included, described below.

Savings generated

 9 out of 10

For both products, the amount of saving on electricity bills is dependent on many factors, such as how large the solar residential installation is, how much power you normally use, time of year, average number of sunlight hours per day etc.

The feedback on various solar energy forums is that many people are consistently reporting well over an average 50% reduction in energy bills, with a significant proportion that have put in the required effort to reduce their bills to zero, connect up to the power grid and sell excess energy back into the grid.

The main thing is that with a relatively small outlay of only a few hundred dollars, it's not difficult to recoup back your solar power cost in savings from your energy bill.

Quality & clarity of written material

 9 out of 10

All the written material in the GreenDIYenergy product is exceptional, particularly the 4 guides dedicated to the actual construction of the solar panels and wind turbines. The instructions are very simple to follow, and nicely complimented by photos and diagrams so that everything is laid out in a crystal clear fashion.

The solar panel installation guide is also excellent, containing many great photographs for clarity, and it also provides good information about applying for permits and adhering to local codes.

All of the remaining written material is all very clear as well, with only one these resources delving into more technical aspects such as wire gauge tables, inverter specifications and the like. The fact that the product manages to avoid bogging people down in technical jargon in most of the written material is great for the majority of people who are not particular technical, and just want to be given the right information to get the job completed.

Quality of videos and sound

 9.5 out of 10

The videos in GreenDIYenergy are absolutely brilliant. There's an authentic solar power expert guiding you through all six videos, building the photovoltaic solar panel from start to finish with nothing skipped.

There's a real human element to these instructional videos, and it's just as if you were learning from a patient friend who explains things in simple terms from the names of the tools, to exactly how to use them, all the while making you feel like nothing could be easier.

The sound quality is great, although I did wish at times that the repetitive soft guitar music in the background would change once in a while. All in all, a fantastic presentation that demystifies the process, and fills the viewer with the confidence and expertise to give this a go themselves.

Backup support

 9 out of 10

A very interesting technique for providing support is used with the GreenDIYEnergy product. Several great online DIY forums are suggested for you to post your solar kit question, where you are likely to be answered in detail by other friendly DIY green energy enthusiasts.

In addition to this however, you should include the GreenDIYEnergy product name in your posts, so that the tech team at GreenDIYEnergy can scour these online forums for posts that include this phrase, and also ensure that you have been provided you with the answer you seek.

The beauty of including a public forum in the provision of support is that you are likely to get a friendly response within minutes or even seconds by helpful, experienced solar panel makers from the wider community. And yet the guarantee of tech support from GreenDIYenergy still remains.

What is the success rate for people trying this?

 9 out of 10

This is difficult to gauge, as feedback mostly comes from people who have experienced success and want to share their excitement. Certainly a very high proportion of people who responded to our survey questions on this topic had acted on the information, and had completed at least one solar panel.

As long as a small amount of determination is shown and a little time put in, anybody from any background can complete this project successfully, and the solar power cost pays for itself in no time.

To gain an insight into how purchasers of this solar kit diy product are finding it, see the following testimonials:

"Your guide is far better than anything else I have found or purchased so far. It's very to the point and has easy step by step instructions.
Thank you so much"

- Celaya Family.

"I don't understand anything about electricity but your product got me started. Thanks to the books and videos, the construction of the panel itself was easy."
- Martine P.
, Sedona, Arizona.

"Yes Joe...I finished my first solar panel today from your directions and my voltmeter reading in the bright sunlight was 16 volts. Terrific, just what I was hoping for from my 32.5v cells. I am a 58 year old female artist who was never much into science. However, I love seeing the voltmeter rise as I connect the cells. Thanks so much, the guides are quite easy to follow.

Earth4Energy Review

Overall 8 out of 10

All in all, Earth4Energy is a great product. It gets strong marks in all areas, and has a loyal and satisfied customer base that testify that this guide has worked for them, to help them complete their first solar kit build and installation.

Although personally I was left a little cold by the documentary style of video presentation, I still felt that the information it contained was presented very clearly and logically.

At its current amazing discounted price of only $49.95, this guide is great value. It has helped and will continue to help tens of thousands of people with their ventures into DIY home-made renewable energy.

The Earth4Energy package normally retails for USD$246, but for a limited time, the price has been slashed to just $49.97, representing great value.  It may be that this huge discount is part of a price war with GreenDIYenergy, but whatever the reason, now would be the time to buy this product before prices rebound back up to recommended retail.

Earth4Energy comes with a 60-day full money back guarantee.

Advertised minimum cost for DIY panel build and install

 9 out of 10

The clearly advertised target cost for construction and installation of the initial array of solar panels is USD$200.  Although most situations would need several of these linked together to fully service the power needs of an average home, buyers of this product have reported that with a little effort, you can easily come in well under the $200 goal in putting your solar kit together and getting the first few panels up.

There's a very useful section on how to obtain your materials as cheaply as possible and keep your solar power cost down to a minimum, but this is perhaps not as well covered as it is in GreenDIYenergy.  And don't forget, that even though you can build and install all of this yourself, along the way you'll still need to liaise with a licensed electrician at various stages for safety and compliance reasons.

What do you actually get with your purchase?

Aside from backup support (discussed later) you get 2 written guides on generating solar power and 2 for generating wind power.  There are 7 videos, and a couple of extra videos that must be viewed online (ie, can't be downloaded, as at the time of writing)

There are 6 further guides in the members download section labelled "Bonus" material, but as these contain critical information about wiring and installation, I wasn't impressed with the "Bonus" label, as this formed a core component of the advertised product.

You also get access to an online video library, and one really neat feature which is an online calculator to help you calculate your current power usage and estimate how large your solar energy project will need to be.

See the remarks in the same section for GreenDIYenergy, as the comments are the same.  Your solar power cost will be much lower than the energy bills you currently pay.

Quality and clarity of written material

8 out of 10

The first 2 guides are well set out and clear, with a total of 87 pages of text with accompanying pictures.  The 2 manuals devoted to wind power are also very well laid out and clear.  The remaining guides are a little on the technical and wordy side, although they do cover very important and relevant solar kit topics like wiring up batteries, design permits, government approval and rebates, system sizing, component gauges and tolerances etc for a typical solar residential installation.

While thorough, these sections run the risk of losing touch with those less experienced with technical language and diagrams.

Quality of videos and sound

8 out of 10

The Earth4Energy product has very high quality videos with crystal clear audio, but they tend to be a little impersonal.  With what seemed to me to be a deep-voiced actor providing a slick narration, the videos feel a little too much like a documentary for my personal taste.

The information is certainly good, and it does contain an extra video on batteries that has no counterpart video in the GreenDIYenergy product, (which covers that topic in written format).

However, a certain lack of warmth made it hard for me personally to relate to the material, and to help me believe that I can do this too.  But I can understand that other people might relate to this approach.

Backup support

8 out of 10

Earth4Energy offers their customers an email-based after-sale support, with a 12 hour response time.  They strive to help their customers with their projects, and make sure all answers are factual and concise.  Below are a couple of comments from customers who are very happy with the support they have received:

I am very pleased with your after sale support. I am computer service tech- with 50+ clients, so will spread the news once I know to explain and convince my customers how solar power could save them money too.

Harry J., Illinois, US.

Dear Admin,
I paid 49 bucks for joining earth4nergy online and 12.95 for CD via mail.  You have answered three questions for me so far.  IN MY OPINION THE THREE QUESTIONS THAT YOU HAVE ANSWERED, WHIcH WERE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME & ANYONE THAT IS GETTING INVOLVED IN WIND GENERATION, HAVE BY FAR PAID FOR THE 49 BUCKS AND 12.95.  It is true you do reply to questions submitted to you.  Thanks a bunch.  I finished my first wind jammer.  It was a small one only 12 VDC 7 amp.  I did the props and all.  Works great.
That was just practice.   I will now start my next project.  This
one is 155 VDC 7 amps.

Thanks a bunch,
Joe.

What is the success rate for people trying this?

9 out of 10

Once again, this is a difficult question to answer, as again I can only rely on the feedback that's available.  On the Earth4Energy website, mention is made of a study that was conducted within a mixed male and female group of 43 people, who had an interest in solar energy but no previous experience in putting a solar kit into action.  All these people were at the very least all able to create a completed solar panel that generated enough power to run a number of household appliances within 1 month, for minimal solar power cost.

Here are some other comments that satisfied Earth4Energy customers had to say:

I was looking to purchase a few retail solar panels for my home but after looking at the price of them it just made sense to build my own.
After going through your materials I managed to build 2 solar panels for under $100! They are just small panels but this is all I need for the lighting and fridge in my courtyard.
Kim C, Sydney, AU.

Hey Guys. Thanks for the solar info. I made a solar pannel like you said by using 36 cells in series. My panel produces just over 18 volts which is exactly what I was after. Anyway, keep up the good work. This is great stuff. I have actually told a few work mates about this and we are going to build solar pannels and sell them for a neat profit. I will let you know how that goes too!

Carl Mayne, Ontario, Canada

Hey Michael.. Thanks for such a detailed guide. I'm usually no good at DIY projects but this is actually quite easy.
I just finished making my first solar panel today. It cost me next to nothing compared to a pre made unit! I'm going to start my 2nd panel this weekend using some left over cells. Thanks for all the help!
